Lucan: The Philosophical Wolf
A Newspaper Review of Lucan's Premiere Episode
In the late 70s and early 80s, Television was ruled by a Trilogith – the "Big Three" networks – ABC, CBS, NBC.
These networks received many complaints from worried parents, Television watchdogs, research groups, and some religious organizations about the amount of violent content featured on their prime-time shows.
By the time Lucan premiered, changes were just being implemented. The critic here felt that ABC overcompensated so much that instead of merely toning down the action on Lucan, they "turned it off."
After the Pilot, Lucan became more of a pacifist, though he wasn't afraid to fight back or defend himself when necessary.
Personally, I felt that the feral aspect of Lucan's personality needed to remain strong; wolves are not golden retrievers; they're apex predators that become menacing when scared or provoked.
Even when Lucan had displayed aggression, he still needed to keep his cool because of his unusual strength and feral nature… not to mention that his eyes turn red!
The University kept Lucan under strict watch, and later, he was stalked by a relentless and determined Bounty hunter/Liutenant they hired.
On the plus side, staff writer David B. Brown at least found Kevin Brophy's performance convincing!
